Learn About Types of Stoves Home heating appliances are generally divided into three categories: freestanding, insert, and zero-clearance units.
A freestanding stove appears just as it sounds - a unit standing alone, connected to the outside by appropriate piping or venting. These appliances are available in gas, wood, or pellet burning options and are an excellent zone heating choice when an existing brick or masonry chimney does not exist. Freestanding stoves are equipped with either base pedestal or stylish legs, and many models allow this option to be interchanged. The style choice is totally up to you.
An insert refers to a heating unit that is installed or "inserted" into an existing wood-burning fireplace. Inserts are sealed units that convert open fireboxes into highly efficient wood, pellet or gas burning appliances. The insert itself slides into the opening, and is finished with a paneled surround. These surrounds come in varying sizes to fit even larger firebox openings.
Zero clearance units are fireplaces that can be framed with minimal or "zero clearances" to combustibles. Most zero clearance appliances are gas burning. However, some wood and pellet applications are also available. This type of appliance allows you to put a fireplace almost anywhere. They can be flush-mounted into a framed wall or placed against a wall and finished with a mantel cabinet.
