Fireplace screens have been in existence for as long as the fireplace itself. The most important criteria in choosing the material are obviously that it would not be flammable; it is just as important that the fireplace screen would not have a flammable finish or shellac. Also, look to screens that would not turn over easily, which can potentially cause a safety concern.
